What is Artemether?

Artemether is a lipid-soluble derivative of artemisinin used for rapid parasite clearance in malaria treatment. It acts by generating reactive oxygen species within the parasite, causing its destruction. Artemether is commonly combined with lumefantrine to form a highly effective oral therapy against drug-resistant Plasmodium falciparum infections.

Uses of Artemether :-

  • Treatment of uncomplicated malaria (in combination with lumefantrine)
  • Malaria in areas with chloroquine resistance

Common Side Effects :-

  • Fever
  • Nausea
  • Muscle aches
  • Dizziness

Precautions & Warnings :-

  • Use only in combination therapy.
  • Monitor ECG in patients with cardiac history.
  • Not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy unless necessary.
