What is Artesunate?

Artesunate is a semi-synthetic derivative of artemisinin, extracted from the Artemisia annua plant. It is a fast-acting antimalarial drug primarily used to treat severe Plasmodium falciparum malaria. Artesunate works by producing free radicals that damage the malaria parasite inside red blood cells. It is often used in combination with other antimalarials to reduce resistance and improve efficacy.

Uses of Artesunate :-

  • Treatment of severe falciparum malaria
  • Acute uncomplicated malaria (in combination therapy)

Common Side Effects :-

  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Temporary heart rhythm changes

Precautions & Warnings :-

  • Monitor liver and kidney function during treatment.
  • Avoid monotherapy to prevent resistance.
  • Use with caution in pregnancy, especially during the first trimester.
