What is Azithromycin?

Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that treats a broad range of bacterial infections by inhibiting protein synthesis within bacterial cells. Known for its long half-life and tissue penetration, it is particularly useful in treating respiratory tract infections, skin infections, and sexually transmitted diseases. Azithromycin is often preferred due to its once-daily dosing and shorter course duration.

Uses of Azithromycin :-

  • Upper and lower respiratory infections
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
  • Ear infections

Common Side Effects :-

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Headache

Precautions & Warnings :-

  • Can prolong QT interval; caution in heart patients.
  • Should not be used for viral infections.
  • Monitor liver function with prolonged use.
