What is Chloramphenicol?

Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic known for treating serious bacterial infections when other antibiotics are ineffective. It works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. Though highly effective, its use is limited due to the risk of serious side effects, including bone marrow suppression, and is reserved for severe infections like typhoid or meningitis.

Uses of Chloramphenicol :-

  • Typhoid fever
  • Meningitis
  • Eye infections (topical form)
  • Rickettsial diseases

Common Side Effects :-

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Bone marrow suppression
  • Headache

Precautions & Warnings :-

  • Risk of aplastic anemia; regular blood monitoring may be needed.
  • Not recommended for minor infections.
  • Avoid in neonates due to "gray baby syndrome."
