Chloroquine Phosphate

What is Chloroquine Phosphate?

Chloroquine Phosphate is a synthetic antimalarial that has been widely used for both treatment and prevention of Plasmodium vivax, P. ovale, and P. malariae infections. It interferes with the parasite’s ability to digest hemoglobin, leading to toxic buildup and parasite death. Resistance has reduced its effectiveness against P. falciparum in many regions.

Uses of Chloroquine Phosphate :-

  • Treatment of non-falciparum malaria
  • Prophylaxis of malaria in chloroquine-sensitive areas
  • Autoimmune conditions (e.g., lupus, rheumatoid arthritis)

Common Side Effects :-

  • Nausea
  • Blurred vision
  • Rash
  • Itching

Precautions & Warnings :-

  • Perform regular eye exams during prolonged use.
  • Contraindicated in retinal and visual field abnormalities.
  • Monitor for resistance patterns in endemic regions.
