What is Fluconazole?

Fluconazole is a systemic antifungal medication from the triazole class that works by inhibiting fungal cytochrome P450 enzymes, thus preventing fungal cell membrane formation. It is highly effective against Candida species and is used for a wide range of fungal infections, including systemic, mucosal, and skin infections. It is commonly taken as an oral tablet or via IV for severe cases.

Uses of Fluconazole :-

  • Vaginal, oral, and esophageal candidiasis
  • Systemic fungal infections
  • Cryptococcal meningitis

Common Side Effects :-

  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Abdominal pain
  • Liver enzyme elevation

Precautions & Warnings :-

  • Use cautiously in liver disease.
  • Avoid alcohol during treatment.
  • May interact with other medications (e.g., warfarin, phenytoin).
