What is Ketoconazole?

Ketoconazole is an antifungal agent used both topically and orally to treat fungal infections by inhibiting ergosterol synthesis, a critical component of fungal cell membranes. While topical use is common for skin and scalp infections, oral use is limited due to potential liver toxicity. It is effective against dermatophytes, yeasts, and certain systemic fungi.

Uses of Ketoconazole :-

  • Fungal skin infections (topical)
  • Dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis (shampoos)
  • Severe systemic fungal infections (oral, under close supervision)

Common Side Effects :-

  • Itching or skin irritation (topical)
  • Nausea, headache (oral)
  • Liver function changes

Precautions & Warnings :-

  • Oral use requires liver monitoring.
  • Avoid acidic drinks with oral form-affects absorption.
  • May interfere with hormone production.
