What is Levetiracetam?
Levetiracetam is an antiepileptic medication used to manage a range of seizure types in both adults and children. It acts by binding to a specific protein (SV2A) in the brain, which helps stabilize nerve activity and prevent seizures. Unlike older anticonvulsants, it has fewer drug interactions and a well-tolerated safety profile, making it a preferred option for many patients.
Uses of Levetiracetam :-
- Partial onset seizures
- Generalized tonic-clonic seizures
- Myoclonic seizures
Common Side Effects :-
- Fatigue
- Irritability
- Drowsiness
- Dizziness
Precautions & Warnings :-
- May affect mood or behavior, particularly in younger individuals.
- Should not be stopped abruptly to avoid seizure recurrence.
- Patients should report any mood changes or suicidal thoughts.
