What is Levetiracetam?

Levetiracetam is an antiepileptic medication used to manage a range of seizure types in both adults and children. It acts by binding to a specific protein (SV2A) in the brain, which helps stabilize nerve activity and prevent seizures. Unlike older anticonvulsants, it has fewer drug interactions and a well-tolerated safety profile, making it a preferred option for many patients.

Uses of Levetiracetam :-

  • Partial onset seizures
  • Generalized tonic-clonic seizures
  • Myoclonic seizures

Common Side Effects :-

  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness

Precautions & Warnings :-

  • May affect mood or behavior, particularly in younger individuals.
  • Should not be stopped abruptly to avoid seizure recurrence.
  • Patients should report any mood changes or suicidal thoughts.
