What is Lumefentrine?

Lumefantrine is a long-acting antimalarial agent typically combined with artemether in artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs). It disrupts the parasite's ability to detoxify heme, leading to its death. Lumefantrine enhances the effectiveness of artemether by maintaining prolonged antimalarial activity and preventing recurrence.

Uses of Lumefentrine :-

  • Treatment of uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria (as part of ACTs)

Common Side Effects :-

  • Headache
  • Weakness
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Abdominal pain

Precautions & Warnings :-

  • Take with food to enhance absorption.
  • Monitor for QT interval prolongation.
  • Not recommended in severe malaria or liver impairment.
