What is Metformin HCL?

Metformin Hydrochloride is a first-line biguanide oral antidiabetic agent used in type 2 diabetes. It works primarily by reducing hepatic glucose production and improving insulin sensitivity, helping cells absorb and use glucose more effectively. It does not cause weight gain or hypoglycemia when used alone, making it a cornerstone in diabetes therapy.

Uses of Metformin HCL :-

  • First-line treatment for type 2 diabetes
  • Management of insulin resistance in PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome)

Common Side Effects :-

  • Nausea or diarrhea
  • Metallic taste
  • Bloating

Precautions & Warnings :-

  • Should not be used in patients with kidney dysfunction.
  • Monitor for signs of lactic acidosis (rare but serious).
  • Take with meals to reduce stomach upset.
