What is Montelukast?

Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist that blocks the action of leukotrienes—chemicals in the body that cause inflammation, bronchoconstriction, and mucus production. It is used as a long-term treatment for asthma, allergic rhinitis, and exercise-induced bronchoconstriction. Though not a rescue medication, it helps prevent symptoms and reduce flare-ups when taken regularly.

Uses of Montelukast :-

  • Maintenance treatment of asthma
  • Seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis
  • Exercise-induced bronchospasm

Common Side Effects :-

  • Headache
  • Abdominal pain
  • Mood changes (rare)
  • Fatigue

Precautions & Warnings :-

  • Should not be used for acute asthma attacks.
  • Monitor for behavioral or mood-related changes.
  • Use in children should be guided by a physician.
